The UK Chamber of Shipping, Nautilus International and the RMT have published joint guidance on designing, delivering and assessing onboard safety familiarisation for seafarers.
Released during Maritime Safety Week 2026 (6 to 10 July), the guidance sets out a practical framework for designing, delivering and assessing the familiarisation a seafarer receives before they begin work on board. It draws on STCW, the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006, the ILO Maritime Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) Guide and the Code of Safe Working Practices, translating those requirements into clear steps for employers.
The guidance is aimed at company management, safety officers and training coordinators, covering how to make sure seafarers understand their responsibilities, onboard procedures and emergency arrangements from the outset.
