Class News 16/2026: Statutory Alert - New channel requirements for VHF GMDSS radiocommunications equipment

Source: Lloyd's RegisterRegulatory Updates

VHF GMDSS equipment must meet the new ITU channelling arrangements by the first radio survey after 1 January 2028, and some coast stations have already dropped the old channels.

IMO circular MSC.1/Circ.1460/Rev.5 updates the guidance on the validity of radiocommunications equipment on ships. VHF GMDSS equipment must be compatible with the frequencies and channelling in Appendix 18 of the ITU Radio Regulations, which replaces two-digit channel numbers with four-digit designations, by the first radio survey after 1 January 2028.

Some administrations have already moved to the new arrangements, and some coast stations no longer support the old channels, so a ship may need to change its equipment sooner to keep in contact with shore in its trading area. Newer equipment can often be brought into line with a software update; older sets may need replacing.

What to do

  • Check whether the VHF coast stations in your area of operation have adopted the new channels.
  • Decide whether equipment needs updating before the 2028 deadline.
  • Ask the equipment manufacturer whether a software update is enough or the set must be replaced.
