NorthStandard's free online ECDIS Training Assessment shows where bridge teams' ECDIS knowledge falls short, from ENC scale selection to telling alarms from alerts.
NorthStandard's ECDIS Training Assessment (ETA) is an online assessment that shows ship operators how well their crews understand ECDIS, and where the gaps are. It is free to NorthStandard members and their crews.
Crew answer 48 multiple-choice questions built on real ECDIS scenarios, grouped under the four stages of passage planning: appraisal, planning, execution and monitoring. Each answer comes with an explanation, each crew member gets a summary of their strengths and gaps, and the operator gets a fleet-level report showing where more training is needed. The assessment takes about 40 minutes and can be paused between sections.
More than 7,000 assessments have been completed so far. Almost half of the crew who took them failed to pick the right ENC scale, around half could not tell an alarm from an alert, and many were unsure about safety settings, datums and installing and updating ENCs.
