Document Seal

Published , last updated

AWP Marine Consultancy LTD seals some of the PDFs it issues, starting with signed travel risk assessments. The seal shows that a document came from us and has not been changed since we issued it.

What your PDF reader shows

A reader that checks signatures, such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, shows whether the document has been changed since it was sealed. If it says the document has been changed, it is not the document we issued.

Some readers also say they cannot confirm who signed the document. That does not mean anything is wrong. Follow the steps below to confirm it is ours.

How to check a document is ours

  1. Open the PDF in a reader that shows signatures, such as Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  2. Open the signature panel and view the signer's certificate.
  3. Find the certificate's SHA-256 fingerprint.
  4. Compare it with the fingerprints we publish at api.awpmarine.co.uk/v1/document-seal/certificates.

If it matches one of them, we sealed the document. When we replace our certificate, the earlier ones stay on that list, so an older document can still be checked.

Each seal also records when the document was sealed, confirmed by an independent timestamping service.
